From Skunked in Key West to a Giant Catch in Islamorada: A Spear-Fishing Adventure

Who doesn't dream of spearing a giant wahoo while free-diving? Our good friend, Paul, did just that recently and agreed to take us out to his favorite spots off of Key West. We got a late start for various reasons but Rob and I dropped in the water at a little after 10 am. Visibility was fair, perhaps 40-50 feet. I maxxed out my depth at 55' and Rob was right behind me, but I only got a glimpse of a wahoo in the distance on two dives down and they were far too far away to attempt a shot, even with my four-banded speargun that Rob made me.

To help ease the pain of getting skunked, while underway to Islamorada, I hooked a huge female Mahi Mahi (with roe)!

We eat everything we catch, so I am looking for a good roe recipe, but the fish has enough steaks for several meals for several people. Our friends Barbie and Honey joined us for fresh Mahi dinner aboard Medical Leave.

What an incredible reminder of the Lord’s handiwork in the photos. His beauty on full display in that Florida Keys sunset and the abundance of His creation in that stunning mahi. Truly awe-inspiring. And wow… that fish never stood a chance! God bless!
Have fun and keep the faith. Love and miss you!!
